Yvonne’s dream of becoming a physiotherapist began in High school. Similar to many Newfoundlanders of her generation, she faced uncertainty about job prospects despite her qualifications. This period coincided with the collapse of the fishing industry and the economy in Newfoundland. Yvonne enlisted in the Canadian military as an Army Logistics officer and attended Royal Roads Military College in Victoria B.C. The recruiter assured her the opportunity to transition her occupation to physiotherapy after she joined. Yvonne bought it, “Hook, line and sinker!” After six years, she took her release from the Army in Winnipeg to pursue her passion for physiotherapy once again.
Yvonne became a member of the Winnipeg Police Service while working on some necessary pre-requisite courses. She also worked part-time as an Air Reserve Public Affairs Officer. Once accepted into Physiotherapy program, Yvonne hung up her police gun belt but continued to work at 17 Wing Winnipeg. After 22 years of military service, Yvonne retired and decided to devote all of her attention to her physiotherapy career.
It was a round-about way to get here but Yvonne knows this is her calling. Her experience in the military and police service have helped her to become a better listener and clinician. All injuries are like an investigation, we can often easily see the symptoms but it takes a bit of searching to find the cause.
