Medical Careers Exploration Program (MCEP): Empowering Indigenous Youth Through Healthcare Education


About the Program
Launched in 2007, MCEP began as an initiative between the Pan Am Clinic Foundation (PACF) and Children of the Earth High School. In 2022, the program expanded to include the entire Winnipeg School Division, nearly doubling student participation. MCEP works closely with the following organizations:
- Pan Am Clinic
- Winnipeg Regional Health Authority
- University of Manitoba Access Program
- Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority
Program's Impact
Program Component: In-School Learning and Supports
Students receive academic guidance and are required to complete the following key courses during their time in the program:
- Biology, Chemistry, Pre-Calculus/Applied Math
- Medical Exploration (Grade 10 credit course) which includes:
- CPR & First Aid Certification
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Traditional Medicines
- Holistic Healing
- Customer Service Training
Program Component: On-Site Practicums
Students participate in hands-on practicum experiences across Winnipeg and surrounding areas:
- Grade 10: 8 days
- Grade 11: 9 days
- Grade 12: 11 days
Experiences include:
- Shadowing healthcare professionals
- Using medical equipment
- Exploring alternative healthcare careers beyond doctors and nurses
- Practicing medical skills on mannequins and each other
Program Component: Post-Secondary Planning
MCEP helps students explore and apply to post-secondary programs:
- One-on-one planning with counsellors and the MCEP Coordinator
- University and College Application and scholarship support
- Merit Scholarship: $1,000 per year completed (up to $3,000)
- Additional PACF Bursary available
Program Component: Culture and Celebration
Cultural identity is woven throughout the program:
- Opening & Closing Ceremonies with land acknowledgment and traditional Pipe Ceremony
- Teachings on traditional medicines and sacred plants
- Sweat Lodge Teachings and Holistic Healing
- Sharing Circles and mentorship from Indigenous healthcare professionals
Students are supported throughout the program by the Program Coordinators, Indigenous Graduation Support Teachers (IGST) and Guidance Counsellors. During their practicums throughout the year the PACF supports the program with lunches, transportation, and on-site staff guidance.
