GTPS (Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome) or gluteal tendinopathy is one of the most common tendinopathies affecting the lower body. It is more common in women, especially those over the age of 40. Common symptoms include pain over the outside (lateral) hip, especially with standing, walking, climbing stairs and lying on that side at night.
To help the tendon to heal and recover, it is important to minimize movements and activities that cause more load or stress to the hip, such as:
– Avoid laying on the effected side. Instead, try lying on your back, or if on your other side ensure to keep a pillow between your knees to avoid your knee falling below the level of your hip
– Avoid sitting with legs crossed
– Avoid standing on 1 leg or with a “hip out” stance
– Avoid repetitive stair climbing or walking (especially hills or inclines)
If you’re experiencing lateral hip pain, a physiotherapist can help assist you with a progressive strengthening program to improve your muscles’ ability to tolerate load, improve pain and return to your activities.
